MoMM 2nd Class Bailey, Lavell (sometimes Lavelle) Estene. Born 29 Jun 1925 in Hamilton, TX. Son of Tempa Armenta (Baker) and Paul Bailey of Fort Worth. Graduated from Pascal High School. Entered Navy 1942. Trained in San Diego and Ohio. Served on the USS Bollinger (APA-234), Boxer (CV-21) and YP 520. Served in New Caledonia and the Philippines. Awarded AP, GCM, AT and Victory Medal. The YP 520 was lost during a typhoon at Buckner Bay, Okinawa, 9 Oct 1945. Discharged 1945. He may have married Mary A Sandstede on 29 Sep 1948 in CA. They were both listed as living at 15471 Avon Circle, Orange County, CA on the California voters’ register. He probably married Emma L Ballew 8 Oct 1976 in Cooke County, TX. He most likely remained in the Navy and retired from the same. He reenlisted for six years on 21 Apr 1949 while aboard the Boxer. Emma’s gravestone in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery lists Lavell’s rank as “EN1” (Engineman First Class).

Bailey came aboard YP 520 29 April 1943. He only stayed until 5 June 1943 when he was transferred back to Station 131. He did not reappear on naval records until 1947. Bailey may have been underage when he first enlisted and it is possible he was discovered while on YP 520. The YP 520 seems to have had much difficulty staying afloat. Below is the Sonoma‘s war diary for June 1943. It appears that YP 520 grounded on Tumbo Reef, New Caledonia shortly after Lavell was transferred off. Sailors are typically superstitious and it might be said that Lavell’s presence was all that kept 520 afloat. While aboard YP 520, Bailey’s service number was listed as 5702051, while later assignments gave 5762051.
