S/Sgt. Gardner, James Wiley (38369526). Born 26 April 1924 in Hamilton, TX. Son of Philemon Earl and Maye Elizabeth (Whittenton) Gardner. Graduated from Hamilton High School. Enlisted in the U.S. Army 8 January 1943 at Abilene, TX. Trained at Sheppard Field, TX., Denver, CO., Utah, Arizona and New York. Served with the 742nd Bomb Squadron, 455th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force. Killed in Action 20 April 1944 on mission to bomb the dockyards at Monfalcone, Italy. His last mission was aboard Consolidated B-24H, 42-52289. Awarded Purple Heart Medal, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Presidental Unit Citation and Citation of Honor. Buried IOOP Cemetery, Hamilton, TX. Position on aircraft, Tail Gunner.
